Topping Out at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center

On January 17, 2013, a crowd of construction workers, medical personnel, University of Maryland (UM) Baltimore Campus leaders and other interested parties gathered for the “topping out” of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center building, which will be a part of the UM BioPark campus in West Baltimore. As part of the celebration ceremony, which marks a milestone in the construction progress, participants were asked to sign a construction beam that would later be lifted to the top of the building. Colored markers were on hand, each signifying a type of cancer that will be among those targeted when the Center is slated to open in 2015. The facility will be the first of its kind in the Baltimore/Washington region, and only the 12th in the United States.
